OK, so I like the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament each year, and I have filled out my bracket and everything this year, but it won’t be quite as much ‘madness’ as usual for me. You see, my alma-mater is the University of Arizona and they made it to the tournament for 25 years straight (second only to UNC’s 27 appearances in a row), but they did not make it this year. In fact the whole Pac 10 is pretty pitiful this year. I believe the Pac 10 had 6 teams in the tournament the last couple years and this year they only have 2, and the highest seeded of those is 8. What’s going on Pac 10? Could Lute Olson’s drama and departure from Arizona have affected the whole Pac 10? Is the Pac 10 just not a marquee-enough conference to keep young kids from jumping to the NBA? I don’t have any answers, but I just hope the Pac 10, and especially Arizona, can start competing again soon!
I know that cold weather has it’s place. I mean, the snow and ice kill alot of those pesky bugs which is nice for me considering I live out in the country. (I’ll never forget one year where the grasshoppers were so bad when I walked through the yard it looked like a sea of grasshoppers parting. That was a heck of year as I am not a bug person but I digress) And while I appreciate winter, I love spring. It’s a time of renewal and new beginnings and everything just seems cleaner.
Usually the first sign of spring for me is the robins. This year they showed up in abundance. The snow had just melted and I was standing staring out the front door wondering if the front yard was ever going to dry up when a flock and I do mean a flock, of robins landed in the yard. I have never seen so many in one place. It was amazing and awesome all at the same time.
The second sign of spring is the pretty white blooms on the Bradford Pear trees that line my driveway and the front of the house. They are so pretty. Springtime is so short in Texas that you have to really enjoy it while it’s here.
Birds, flowers, bright colors and long rides on the Harley mean Spring is really here so get out there and enjoy it while it lasts. For those of us in Texas, we know that the moderate temps and green grass won’t last for long as summer, with it’s 100 degree heat and little to no rain, is right around the corner. Happy Spring!
I grew up about 20 minutes from the race track and have seen a few NASCAR races in my day. I’ve even met a couple of drivers and managed to get a few autographs. Although I have slacked off on keeping up with NASCAR events, I was excited to hear that DealTaker is going to be sponsoring NASCAR’s legendary veteran, Morgan Shepherd.
Born October 12, 1941, Morgan Shepherd has been a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver since 1977. He has also raced in the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series. His racing career began when he used his “souped up moonshine” car to earn extra money on the weekends. Shepherd finished second in the championship to Jack Ingram in NASCAR’s Late Model Sportsman division. In 1980, he won the series title. He became the second oldest race winner when he won the spring race at Atlanta at the age of 51.
So, what does NASCAR, Morgan Shepherd, the Nationwide Series and Dealtaker.com have in common? – Bristol Motor Speedway’s Turf Builder 300. Ladies and gentlemen start your engines! After some time off, it’s time to go racing!
As quoted by the March 15th Press Release: “Legendary veteran, Morgan Shepherd and the #89 Victory In Jesus Racing Chevrolet team are proud to introduce DealTaker.com to race fans coast to coast. As Morgan Shepherd and race fans alike are feeling the economic crunch it is DealTaker.com to the rescue!
DealTaker.com has stepped up to the plate, not only by sponsoring Morgan Shepherd, but also helping all NASCAR fans to get more and save more during these harsh times. The #89 Victory In Jesus Racing Chevrolet will be sporting the action-packed web site logo as an associate sponsor on its rear quarter panel during one of NASCAR’s most exciting races on the circuit – the half-mile concrete oval at Bristol Motor Speedway.
In his 43rd consecutive year of racing, Morgan Shepherd is known in NASCAR for taking a little and making the most of it. “Partnering with DealTaker.com is a perfect fit for our team,” states Shepherd. “We have to work smarter, not harder withour resources. This company is doing that with us and can help our fans do the same.”

Laying on a beach with the sun beating down on me, listening to the waves crash, a light breeze kissing my face, margarita in hand, no phones, computers, clocks or deadlines would be the ultimate pleasure for me right now. However, like most of us, a hectic life and daily responsibilities makes this a tad bit impossible right now. It will happen. ..someday, but not now. Instead, I gravitate towards the simple pleasures.
We all know what simple pleasures are. It’s those tiny moments that sporadically occur where we take a deep breath in and savor the moment. More than likely it will be short lived, but, if you’re like me, you’ll take what you can get even if it’s only for a minute or two. It’s those tiny moments that give us a break from the chaos and, often times, brings on some new found clarity. We refocus. It’s almost like a mini restart to the day. The world shifts a bit back on track.
Here are a few of my simple pleasures:
1. Silence – It doesn’t come often in this house, but when it does, I take it in. I usually stop what I’m doing, lean back in my office chair, close my eyes and take a deep breath. Breathe in…breathe out. It only lasts a few minutes, but I take this time to refocus.
Over the last week, I have been forced to face the grim facts of life; the fact that I will have loved ones fall sick & I will have loved ones pass away. It is part of all of our lives. It is one of the ’staple’ things we can expect, taxes & passing away. Even though some of us are sheltered from sickness/death at points in our lives, if we have any friends or loved one, we will eventually have to deal with it.
While being faced with this over the last week, I have started thinking about a conversation I had with my dad when I was really young, about 6 or 7. He said to me, “Do you know why I ALWAYS tell you I love you when I leave or get off the phone?”
I answered, “No.”
Affiliate marketing has been a staple of online marketing for over a decade in the United States. I have personally enjoyed it as a retailer and as an affiliate for almost ten years now. Europe has also extended into this channel and is really focusing on stronger development of this performance marketing channel. At DealTaker we recognize that the US is a small part of a big world and we are planning to attend the a4u expo in Munich, Germany this spring. After going over to London last year to attend the Linkshare Symposium there and meeting many great merchants and learning more about the retail landscape there, we felt compelled to launch our first non-US marketing page specifically for the UK – DealTakerUK. We have been pleased with the ensuing results.
In attending the a4u expo in Munich this year, we are more excited to meet a broader range of merchants and also creative marketing professionals with a different view than our own. Personally I love Europe and e-commerce and the opportunity to put those two things together. DealTaker may still just participate in the UK for awhile since the US is clearly our focus, but new points of view and the ability to interact with our global peers is an exciting proposition.
I can’t believe it is tax time again, ugh. I have been a long time user of Turbo Tax and logged in a couple weeks ago to start the process this year. While doing taxes is no fun, it is nice to be able to log in and have everything load up from the previous year. It is also cool to be able to log in and do some of my return, then save and exit and come back another day and pick up where I left off. For the first time this year I actually imported some of my tax records and was surprised at how quick and easy that process was.
While there are plenty of options for doing taxes, I have to say that my preference has always been Turbo Tax.
OK, I guess I better get back to my taxes (and watching the Olympics, go USA!)…
The first thing you should know is that many years ago my sisters and I nicknamed my Dad, Ranger Gene. This was not some random name noooo,…. my Dad can name almost any bird, tree or rock formation. Our vacations as kids were to all the national parks to “see the scenery”. Well when you’re 8 or 9 years old, one tree/canyon, national park looks pretty much like the next. It used to drive him crazy that we weren’t soaking up nature and we’d rather stay in the hotel room and play.
Now Dad liked to bring that “Ranger Gene” spirit and apply it at home. As far back as I can remember he had a green thumb and would grow trees from acorns, flowers from seeds. As a matter of fact, most of the landscaping around my parent’s house is something that Dad has grown from infancy. One of his prize plants was an oak tree that he planted in the front yard some 32 years ago. This tree truly started from an acorn. It grew every year as Dad carefully tended to it. It grew to be a big beautiful mighty oak that provided a ton of shade. I have alot of memories of playing in that tree and later, Mom and I sitting under the tree talking about life and all those “bumps” in the road I seem to hit. That tree was the personficiation of home for me.
I have been trying to watch the Winter Olympics every chance I get since it started last Friday. I am loving it, however, there are some sports I prefer watching over others, most of them I wouldn’t even dare to attempt myself…I can dream though.
Go here to check the standings by nation, men, women, or by day. You can also find out what’s coming up next and what’s going on live, there are some fun facts about the Winter Olympics too, which I thought was interesting.
Here is the Overall Medal Count for the 2010Â Winter Olympics to date:
Down time is a luxury I rarely indulge in. From the moment I get up at 10 a.m. until I go to bed, usually around 3 a.m., it is non-stop for me. I’m used to it. I like keeping busy. If I had consecutive days in which there was nothing to do, I think I would go nuts. I drink my first cup of coffee at my desk and, most days, I eat my dinner here too. Between work, taking care of loved ones, keeping the house up, tackling projects around the house, making meals and other miscellaneous stuff, there is no down time.
Once in a very great while I do take a down day. These down days usually happen once every couple of months. It’s not something I plan ahead of time. I’ve learned that planning anything is nearly impossible. Yesterday was one of those down days for me. It was a last minute decision. Although I had evening plans, I had every intention of working and doing stuff around the house during the day. Late Saturday night I made the decision not to.  Sunday was going to be a down day. This involved a bit of prep work, but, it was going to happen.
Down days, for me, means exactly that. Unless the world is coming to an end or there is a medical emergency, don’t bother me. Deadlines, projects, clocks, unfinished housework, the phone, computers, alarm clocks and my list of things to do don’t exist. There is no such thing as time. I simply get up, enjoy my morning coffee on the sofa with a magazine, or good conversation with my sweetie, and go from there.
Dallas usually gets a dusting or two of snow each winter (though many winters get none). Yesterday was our fifth snow of the season – and it was the single biggest snowfall on record at DFW airport for one day (officially more than 11 inches). Here is the view today -
My family recently bought a new HDTV, upgrading from a 32†to a 47â€, and I love our new TV. When we bought our first one, we didn’t do any research. It was a total impulse buy with some extra money we had at the time a couple years ago. This time I did quite a lot of research beforehand and ended up with an HDTV that I’m very satisfied with and that I feel is a significant upgrade from my first one. Oh, and it cost a lot less than the average cost of an HDTV of its size. I’m just going to impart the few important things I learned about HDTV-on-a-budget in as little words as possible.
Listen: if you are buying less than 50â€, and you can save a few or even a couple hundred bucks doing it, you will probably be very happy with a 720p HDTV. Especially if you primarily just watch TV. Most HD cable broadcast is in 720p or 1080i. There are some 1080p broadcasts, but they are in the minority. I’m sure that will change in the coming years though. If you are buying 50†or bigger, I would strongly suggest getting 1080p though (that’s if they even make bigger ones in 720p).
We’re excited to give you blog readers a sneak peek at the new DealTaker look!
This is a glimpse of the new DealTaker hompage. The look is very different from what we’ve had in the past but you’ll still be able to find everything that you’re used to in the same place as it always has been.
The new page is designed to help people find what they want a bit more easily and to, hopefully, be a bit easier on the eyes.
These changes will be put in place in the middle of February, and throughout the rest of 2010, we’ll slowly be making other changes so that we can help you save even more time while we are saving you money.
We’d love to hear your feedback. Please feel free to leave any comments, suggestions, praises or concerns in the comments below!
